Don’t be afraid of White!

While I am a great advocate of color, there are times when white is the right color! The paint company Benjamin Moore just announced that their ‘color of the year’ for 2016 is “Simply White”.

By layering many levels of white, it is possible to create a very sophisticated décor, with many different levels of light to bring out the nuances. However, an all-white room is not for the faint hearted (or for a family with small children!)

White can be a great way to create a canvas on which the rest of the room is painted, giving very clear edges to any color used.

When I work with a client, the first thing I determine is what will the room be used for and how high is the traffic pattern.

For a family with small children, white is bested used higher up on the wall, away from little smudgy hands. For rooms with lower traffic, a great effect can be to have all four walls white, and put a color on the ceiling, pulling that color down into accents in the room.

White amplifies light and tends to make a room feel larger than it is, and when combined with windows that let in a lot of sunlight it can create a wonderful ‘glow’.
